I agree—women’s fiction is a crappy category.

Shooting for the "book club/upmarket fiction" market is wise. This is a very big audience.

I agree—and the novel has the sort of social issues that are up for discussion. I think book club members (in-person ones) are charitable to one another’s opinions on difficult topics. At any rate, this particular book is a passion project, so I had to write it (over and over and over).

Absolutely. Artists can't really pick their category. And yet we do, and write within these constraints. It's probably good. It forces you to be stylish.
