I wonder if there are temporary fashions, fads even, in the types of materials that agents and publishers prefer. Maybe something not thought attractive this year will be met with enthusiasm five years from now.
Absolutely. Remember vampires and then “No more vampires!” And then a few years ago, vampires were new again and back in vogue. I heard many agents say in interviews that the pandemic was too depressing and they didn’t want anything to do with it. But I’ve recently read a few books taking place in the pandemic. So, someone must have gotten past that becasue the books probably took a year to made it to print and availability.
